Long Gone

>> Sunday, October 30, 2011

Everywhere you turn around there seems to be a new cell phone company or deal popping up for cell service.  You will probably see a great deal more with the upcoming holidays approaching.  Cell phones make great Christmas presents!

Remember the days of just a house phone?  Or how about the days of pay phones?  When I was in middle/high school my family had just one phone and that was located in the kitchen with one long cord; no privacy, no call waiting, and no caller id.  My parents answered that phone and screened the calls; rightfully so.

Pay phones came into play whenever I went off as a teen for the evening whether to a high school football game, date, or other event.  I always got the "make sure you always have a quarter on you so you can call us at anytime, no matter what".  Those days are long gone.  Good luck finding a pay phone that's in operation anywhere.

I remember how I couldn't wait to own a cell phone.  I didn't even care back then who it was with as long as I had a cell phone.  Today much is different.  Now there are so many options to choose from no matter where you live.  UK like the US also has pay as you go mobile phones where you can choose your network and phone manufacturer.  The possibilities are endless and the deals vast.  Today I can't imagine not having a cell phone as it's not only communication but a sense of security.  I guess it takes the place of those quarters.  Do you remember your first cell phone?

Zenni Optical - eyeglasses start at $6.95 on up

In need of a new pair of glasses this Fall?  I know we certainly are. Zenni Optical has a really cool feature on their site where you can try on glasses the virtual way! It can be a pain ordering eyeglasses online because it's hard to imagine how they will look on your face. I even find it hard picking out a pair at the store since I can never decide!  I can't stand shopping for something and have that rushed feeling.  If I do, I end up doubting my decision after buying.  Should I have went with classic black or bold red?  Now all you have to do is upload a head shot through their site to try on your next pair of glasses at your leisure!

Zenni's glasses start at $6.95 on up which isn't bad at all. If you check out the Zenni Frame Fit feature be sure to take not of these tips. First you want a straight on head shot, not tilted or side view.  Also, you definitely don't want to be wearing your glasses when you snap your photo either. If you try it out come back and let us know how it went!

Once we all get up-to-date eye exams, we will be on the eyeglasses patrol!  Here's a good question for you; do you pick out your own glasses always or rely on the opinion of others (like whoever is with you)?

HP Ink Challenge Week 2&3 #inkology #hpinkchallenge

>> Wednesday, October 26, 2011

Earlier, I shared with you week 1 of the HP Ink Challenge.  The HP Ink Challenge (for those of you just tuning in) is an ink challenge where I was selected (along with about 100 other lovely people) to try and test HP Ink versus Refill Ink and share feedback on my printing experiences.  During the course of the challenge we have weekly printing assignments.

For the start of week 2, we were to print some of our favorite photos from summer on both printers as well as a black and white.  I chose a couple of family shots that were taken at the beach where the sun put quite a glow on our faces.  Sitting these side by side to compare, I found that ultimately the HP Ink is much better and more true to life (once again) whereas the Refill Ink cast more of a reddish-orange hue on everyone's face.  You can see some of that below on the feet.

I used the same family portrait at the beach for my B&W and again the HP Ink looked better with a greyish or warmer tint while the Refill Ink had a much darker shade (coolish) to it.  However, I asked my husband his opinion and he thought the Refill Ink B&W looked better because he seemed to think that the darkness shade provided more detail to the clothes we were wearing, beach behind us etc.  So, a matter of individual preference, I guess.

We were also to visit HP Inkology on Facebook and print an activity.  I chose the Kung Fu Panda coloring page in the Activities for Families section.  I really didn't notice much difference with this as I did with the photos. However, there is still a darker shade of color on the Refill Ink.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For week 3 we got to mess up photos!  This was called our Splish Splash and Dunk assignment.  We started off by printing photos on both printers but instead of HP paper on the Refill Ink printer we used Kodak.  For the Splash Test we simply sprinkled water on a few photos from the HP Ink printer and the Refill Ink printer.  After 60 seconds we attempted to wipe them off with a paper towel while letting a couple of other photos air dry.

My results from the Splish Splash test was the Kodak paper got water-bubbles and ink loss on my paper towel when I wiped them dry.  The HP just had faint staining on the paper itself.  I also noticed that the Kodak paper was sticky and easy to peel  the top coat of picture away.

Dunk Test - HP Ink Printer on Left and Kodak Paper/Refill Ink on Right

For the Dunk test we simply dunked photos from both printers  in water and let dry completely on their own.  What I found was that the Kodak paper/Refill Ink curled bad and the photo was pretty much ruined.  With the HP paper, the water just sat on top of it and later dried and had faint staining with a slight curl only on the edges.  Whereas the Kodak/Refill Ink seemed to have absorbed the water completely.

Refill Ink still darker....maybe it's using more ink per print....

We also had a creative project which involved visiting the HP Creative Studio for Home and chose two projects to complete.  I chose to print some fall themed recipe cards as well as a pumpkin carving template.

We still have our Fade Test in the window which I mentioned in the last post .  We also continue to print the HP photos every week and compare side by sides.  Stay tuned, this is just the half!

Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer Review

I don't think I've ever taken a temperature of my little one as easy as I have with the Temporal Artery Thermometer.  I not only tried it on the little one but on hubs and I as well just to see how it works and it's accuracy.  It's so simple and fast that it can be used on a sleeping baby!

The Temporal Thermometer reads the temperature in two seconds.  It takes just a 9 volt battery and with a push of the SCAN button it'll turn on/off  (it will turn off automatically after 30 seconds).  The thermometer has a removable protective cap and the lens can be cleaned with a simple alcohol swab.

Here's how it works:  Hold thumb over SCAN button with the probe on the center of the forehead.  Press the SCAN button and gently slide the thermometer over to the hairline.  (A red light will flash and you'll hear a beep indicating a measurement has been taken)  Release SCAN button and remove thermometer once  you reach the hairline.  Your temperature will display on the screen.

This thermometer can be found at Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Costco, Babies R Us, Toys R Us, Sam's Clubs nationwide and even at Amazon. This is one thing to have on your baby registry or to keep in mind as a gift for those who are expecting.

For more information you can visit http://www.exergen.com/.

Disclosure -I received the Exergen Temporal Thermometer to facilitate this review. The opinions expressed are my own and I was not swayed by the items mentioned above.

Mailbox Goodies - Slacker Version

There's not much to show in the mailbox category.  I've cut way back on what I request as far as samples and coupons for no other reason than maybe burn out.  Sometimes it's nice to step back and break away from it all and I'm sure my mailman doesn't mind either.

On a side note, I was running through some blogs recently and came across a site dedicated to shoes (my splurge category)  http://www.shoeminute.com/.  I'm not a big heel person per say but I do dig some of the boots and sandals.  If it were up to me personally I'd just go barefoot.  I still wonder how someone who dislikes wearing shoes 70% of the time can still sucker up to a good shoe sale.

Well here's my pitiful week of mailbox goodies.  First up is a Kleenex Cool Touch sample and coupon which was available through the Target website awhile back (I think) while the rest is magazines.  I told ya it was pathetic.  In fact, I think the only thing I requested this week so far was a Vocalpoint $4.00 coupon for Vicks Nature Fusion.

Well, here's hoping your mailbox was fuller than mine!

Real Moms Love to Eat #RMLTE

>> Monday, October 24, 2011

I love eating.  That's as plain as I can put it.  I've lived most of my life relishing in the joy that I can eat pretty much whatever I want without any repercussions.  That all changed for me when I hit thirty and mother nature stepped in.

Ever since I passed the thirty marker I've found that I can't continue to eat the same foods and portions that I have in the past (sadly).  My metabolism has slowed combined with a loss of energy and it shows.  My greatest downfall is Mt.Dew (not even a food!) which is full of sugar and calories but I buy it every week!

This winter a new book (Real Moms Love To Eat) is coming out written by a mom and certified health counselor named Beth Aldrich.  I'm excited to share this book with you because I think it'll be a fun read!

The book is broken down into sections with fun plans for moms to gradually implement into their daily lives.  There are 21 days of meal suggestions, tips and even recipes.  As a great addition, she also includes some lifestyle changes to help you continue on your new reclaimed love of food journey.

What I hope to be most useful to me personally is finding new ways to implement some healthier alternatives for those moments when self control is out the window(like the "once a month" saga)!  Plus I love experimenting in the kitchen so I'm looking forward to the recipes too!

What's even great is if you are currently a blogger she has a great program going on called "Food Affairiate"!  She invites you to spread the word about the book coming out in January by reviewing a digital copy on your blog.  After doing so, you'll also receive a hard copy and a swag bag from her book tour sponsors!  She has some other awesome ideas you may want to dabble into like hosting a home book launch party, guest posts and more!

HP Ink Challenge Week 1#inkology #hpinkchallenge

>> Sunday, October 23, 2011

I have been taking part in an HP Ink Challenge, where selected bloggers get to try and test HP Ink versus Refill Ink!  I have never tried refill ink prior to this challenge so I was excited to be included in the HP Challenge.  During each week of the challenge we will have various assignments to partake in with detailed instructions.

HP sent us all the supplies we would need including  two new HP Photosmart printers and enough ink and supplies for the tests. We were sent nearly empty cartridges for one of  the printers to be labeled as the Refill Printer while the other will have new HP 60 XL tri-color and black cartridges.

After labeling each printer and making sure they were connected and working properly it was time for my first assignment; to get my first ink refill.

I called ahead to Office Max to make sure they did refill ink since this would be my first time doing so. They said they did so I drove only about 10 minutes to make my refill. From the time I got inside the store (11AM Saturday) to leaving it was about 25 minutes.  I had to wait up front for the tech associate to come and do the refills.  It ended up only taking him about 15 minutes for the process while the rest was just waiting.  I stayed in the store as he did it.  He seemed to know what he was doing and I was pleased overall with the service.

He boxed mine up and sealed them in a bag along with a rubber piece.  They did not leak at all.

They charged me $10 for the black and $15 for the color.  Once I got home and installed them in the HP Refill printer, I haven't had any more alignment issues (like I did prior to the refill).

The second assignment in week one included a print test.  We printed a few color photos and a New York City subway map.  I noticed virtually no difference with the subway map but there was a distinct difference when it came to the photos.

They didn't look too bad when you looked at them as a single photo but side by side there was a noticeable color difference.   The Refill ink looks darker than and not as true to life as the HP Ink.
.

Lastly for week one, we were to print on each printer the same color/symmetrical like photo to place in a sunny window for a fade test.  I chose a Gerber daisy.  At the end of the challenge we get to see what the results are of the fade test so stay tuned.

I received product to fascinate the HP Challenge - All opinions are 100% my own

Tanner's Tasty Paste (Flavored Toothpaste for Kids) Review and Giveaway ENDED

>> Monday, October 17, 2011

If you're like me and have a little one that really doesn't like the taste of toothpaste then you may want to check out Tanner's Tasty Paste.  Despite there being other flavors on the market like bubble gum etc, we've yet to find one that is liked and mint can be a bit too tingly for kids.  The creator of Tanner's Tasty Paste is a mom and pediatric dentist!

I most recently tried out Cha Cha Chocolate, Baby Bling, and Banilla Bling!  I think the one that I liked (Oh yes, yes I did use it!) most was the Cha Cha Chocolate.  The best way to describe that one is it has a cocoa flavor (no artificial flavors).  You might also like to know that it's not brown; it's more of a light beige color (contains no artificial colors).  This is an anti-cavity,  fluoride and natural toothpaste.  It also contains no dairy and is gluten free.  It is made to mimic chocolate ice cream.

The Banilla Bling is the sister/brother of Cha Cha Chocolate featuring a vanilla ice cream flavored paste.  This one I thought was really good too and was the flavor the little one liked best!  While the Baby Bling is like the little brother/sister of them both as this one is suitable for younger children since it contains no fluoride or saccharin.

All of these flavors retail for $6.00 on the http://www.tannerstastypaste.com/ website and on Amazon.  Another thing to mention is that you don't feel that "gritty" feeling when brushing.  It's a very smooth paste.  Getting young children to brush early will definitely help in the long run against cavities.  In fact our dentist uses a machine to detect cavities early before they can even be seen by the naked eye.  To bad this toothpaste wasn't available when I was a kid!

For more information about Tanner's Tasty Paste be sure to check out their website and/or facebook page!

Window Shopping

Do you have an Undermount Kitchen Sink in your home?  I've seen them while out and about and I stalk HGTV late at night and have been getting my head full of ideas.   But I love that you can just wipe your counter right into the sink without that ugly edge thing being around it.

The last time we were out I saw some copper sinks which I loved!  Have you seen those?  They are on the expensive side but very nice indeed.  It's just one of those things we do not need right away.  Plus, one project usually leads to another and I just know the counters would be next eventually!  There's a place in town that we go out for "date" night every now and then that has the most beautiful counter tops ever in their wine room.  They are mostly a deep black with gold specks in them that are so shiny it's like looking in a mirror.  Projects like that wouldn't be so bad if there wasn't such a clean up afterwards and the lack of use in a room!

Our sink just has items that I don't use like a built in soap dispenser.  The sprayer also has a mind of it's own!   If we replaced ours we'd also have to replace the faucet as well which I'd be happy to do since I've seen some I've liked.   Maybe one day down the road we'll find some Undermount Kitchen Sinks that suits our needs once we're ready.

Do you have any suggestions?

What's your Tip for being Flu free? #lysolcoldandflu

>> Wednesday, October 5, 2011

With Fall in full swing (brrr) and winter quickly approaching (sigh), minimizing the impact of cold and flu season is important to a lot of us.  I hate being sick and I know kids don't find it fun either. Germs can spread so easy when kids are in school sharing lunches (yes, yes they do) and school supplies, playing with friends, and participating in extracurricular activities.  In fact, the first year my little one started school we had our first bout with strep throat.  It was awful and required a trip to the emergency room.  When your kids are sick it’s almost heartbreaking as a mom because you have to wait it out.  You can’t snap your fingers and make the unpleasant sickness go away.

I don’t even want to say that we’ve never had the flu before (or the shot -gasp) because I don’t want to jinx anything! But, it’s so.  We all get our dose of a cold of some sort or a stomach bug but we keep our fingers crossed when it comes to the flu.

Despite all we try to do to keep our kids healthy so they can stay active, alert and not miss any school, the nasty flu can come at any time.  The experts at Lysol recommend getting a flu shot, washing your hands with soap and water and scrub thoroughly for 20 seconds, and routinely clean and disinfect surfaces to help stop the spread of germs. Lysol Spray and Lysol Wipes kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses on hard non porous surfaces.

Aside from that, here are a few things we personally do to try and be as germ free as possible.

-        When I pack school lunches in the morning I try and keep antibacterial gel in there so during a rushed lunch (to get on the playground) at least maybe the hands will get clean.
-        Aside from lunch, I always throw reminders out to wash hands before dinner and after the restroom too.
-        Dressing proper for the day is also essential.  Hats, gloves, layers are all important (as it gets colder) depending on the temperatures of where you live.
-        I also used to clean literally everything after I saw the onset of an illness coming on. From toys to kitchen chairs, I was scrubbing it all down.
-        I know a lot of folks may boil toothbrushes but I just get rid of them (now you can recycle some of them).  I get out a new toothbrush because after so long especially when it comes to kids, they wear them out pretty good anyway.
-        No offense to those that are sick but I try to stay away from those that are sick (unless it's my kids) and teach them to not be right up on somebody when they are coughing and sneezing!  This also goes for playing at homes where a child has had the flu…as germs may still be lingering around!
-        Last but not all or least – keep things out the mouth.  Including toys, pens etc.

I’d love to hear your tips too!  What do you guys do at your home to try and avoid sickness?  Like I said before I don’t want to jinx it, but here’s to good health to us all this flu season!

I wrote this blog post while participating in the SocialMoms and Lysol blogging program, for a gift card worth $40. For more information on how you can participate, click here.
