Your bathroom is definitely the smallest room in your home, unless you’re an oil prince. By unleashing your creative potential and loosening your purse strings just the tiniest bit, you can redecorate your bathroom and still have funds left over. Here are 15 thrifty, fun and creative ways to give your bathroom a new avatar.
Update Your Bathroom’s Ceiling
1. Layer paint-able wallpaper on your ceiling; this wallpaper is textured and looks like embossed white plaster. With a paintbrush, you can highlight designs and even stick beads, bits of glass and metal to create interesting effects.
2. Ceilings are the most neglected parts of bathrooms. Paint your bathroom ceiling a bright color such as egg yolk yellow to bring in more light.
3. Cut a large piece of cardboard and paste interesting pictures on it. Create a border using beads or shells. Paste this collage in the middle of your freshly painted ceiling for a graphical effect. Cut the cardboard into a shape that works best with the shape of your bathroom.
Update Your Bathroom Walls
4. Depending on the amount of light in your bathroom, you can paint it a light, bright color, or a bold deep color, all the way to the ceiling. It’s best to use a waterproof oil paint for your bathroom.
5. Most bathrooms are small, to avoid cluttering the walls. However, you can still put up a small painting, a picture collage or even a decorate lamp or two on the walls.
6. Paint your walls in a sea-wave pattern, or a sand-dune pattern to create an interesting effect. This works best if you have a slightly spacious bathroom.
7. Laminate or frame colorful pictures from garden catalogs or art work that you can print from the internet. These are cheap to create and add an interesting touch to your freshly-painted walls.
8. If your children are budding artists, scan their paintings into your computer and print them out on photo-quality paper. Laminate these and hang them up in your kids’ bathroom walls.
9. Add a bead board or thick wainscoting along one wall. You can buy cheap bead boarding from home needs outlets, along with ready made wainscoting.
10. A large mirror can do wonders to your bathroom’s lighting and looks. Mount a large mirror on one wall and place attractive lights over it.
11. If you cannot afford a large mirror, paste small mirror pieces artistically on a large, colorful piece of cardboard and mount it on a freshly-painted wall.
Update Your Bathroom Floor
12. You can paint on top of concrete or vinyl flooring to give it a pick-me-up. Prime your flooring using a specialty primer. Use a stencil to create tile borders and apply several coats of polyurethane to emulate plastic coating. Now you can create interesting textures, or paintscapes as you wish.
13. Get a colorful bathmat with flowers, dolphins or cartoons on it. This creates a splash of color and looks great on a newly done floor.
14. If your bathroom floor has old tiles on it, scrub them till they shine. Then carefully fill the cracks in between the tiles with paint in an alternate color. For example, if the tiles are white, paint the cracks deep blue or black for an interesting floor.
Update Your Shower Area
15. Scour flea markets and garage discards for antique bath fittings and shower heads. When polished and done up, these can add great charm to your bathroom.
16. Polish your taps, faucets and shower heads till they shine. If you have ceramic fittings or rusty steel ones, paint them all a cheerful color.
17. Buy good polyester shower curtain fabric, and get your family pictures iron pressed on it. If you know how to, hem the curtains yourself or get a local seamstress to do it for you.
18. If you don’t want to iron press family pics, create the shower curtain and hand paint seascapes or other designs on them.
Update Your Vanity Countertop
19. Replacing your vanity countertop can be expensive. You can, however, hire a fabricator to resurface the top using fiberglass topping.
20. If your vanity countertop is made of granite, a good scrubbing and polish should do the trick. If the corners are chipped, paste some white cement in the shape of the corner and paint it black.
21. If you have a ceramic counter that’s chipped with age, fix the chipped parts with white cement and paint the entire countertop in a different color.
Update Your Lavatory Commode And Seat
22. Scrub down your commode and fix any chips in the ceramic using a ceramic fixer tool kit.
23. A fresh coat of bright paint does wonders to your tired-looking commode.
24. If your lavatory seat looks jaded, replace it cheaply with a seat in a contrasting color.
25. If you’ve got a creative hand, paint interesting graphics, flowers or mermaids on the commode sides, but keep the designs small.
Update Bathroom Cabinets
26. Fitting new cabinets can be expensive, so scrub them down, prime and repaint them in a coordinated color.
27. Paste bits of mirror pieces, sea shells or beads along with wainscoting of your cabinets to create texture and depth.
28. Polish the cabinet pulls or paint them a bright gold or brassy color.
