Monte Carlo: The Must See Summer Movie! In Theaters Friday!!

>> Thursday, June 30, 2011

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Monte Carlo. All opinions are 100% mine.

Like chick flicks?  Grab your daughter(s) and/or friends and head to the theaters this Friday (July 1st)  to check out the new hot summer movie Monte Carlo!  Starting on 6/29 you can get tickets ahead of time at Fandango.  How cool is that?!  To see what all the buzz (like mall tours) is about check out and or like the official Monte Carlo Facebook page!

The movie Monte Carlo is about Grace (Selena Gomez) who is an ordinary girl that becomes an accidental heiress on a summer trip to Paris. This turns into the fantasy of a lifetime for her. On this dream vacation, Grace, along with her best friend and step-sister, discover that the greatest adventure is finding out who they really are - by assuming another person's identity!  Clever girls aren't they?  This isn't just any person, it's a full blown public figure in Paris.

This movie is rated PG.

Sounds sweet doesn't it?   We are excited to go see this and I hope I can find it at a drive in theater.  We love going to those during the summer. My little one is a fan of Selena Gomez and I've sat and watched Wizards of Waverly Place via the Disney Channel a time or two!

I've checked out the trailer myself and it looks like a fun movie for all ages.  What did you think about the trailer?  If you're looking for a little one on one time or like light romantic comedies be sure to check out the trailer (if you haven't yet) and mark your calendars.

Looking for Something?

Tired of having a bunch of phone books cluttering your junk drawers or desks?  Which  local yellowpages is your main local search engine?

Partnered with many sites like Yelp and Citysearch, Local.com offers users to visit one site to view the content from other sites. You can find driving directions, local restaurants, coupons, business contact information and hours, as well as an aggregate of reviews from mulitple sites -- essentially a generic one stop shop for finding local businesses and services.

You can also write reviews yourself and contribute.  What do you think?  I keep a phone book in my car just in case I need a tow, or emergency numbers that I may not have on my phone. Other than that though we rarely use one at home.  What about you?

Mailbox Goodies - I won!

Well this week's goodies were much better than I expected.  Since I haven't requested much lately due to all the work we've been doing on the home I wasn't sure if much of anything would show up.  Well I was wrong.  Back in March I believe it is, I was one of 100 bloggers who won a Redbox Promotion via the Mom Bloggers Club!  This was cool because we are such movie fans around here.  Promotional/Corporate Gifts can be so much fun!

My prize pack came with 2 sets of movies, free rental codes, popcorn, and candy!  I'm perfectly geared up for movie night now.  I also won another Mom Bloggers Club prize pack which was from Twizzlers!!  It's a snazzy beach tote, with Twizzlers towel, and a cooler in one.

The cooler had a surprise stash of Twizzlers candy (my secret)!

I also received a couple wipes samples.  One from Pull-Ups and the other from Parents Choice.  These came accompanied with coupons and a Victoria Secret catalog.

And last but not least a few magazine subscriptions.  One from Marie Claire, another from Bloomburg Business Week and the other from Parenting.  Bloomburg has had some very interesting articles lately showcasing on the cover.  Have you checked any of them out?

What goodies did you receive this week?

Spice Rack Needed

>> Saturday, June 25, 2011

Something that I've been looking to buy for some time now but have not found exactly what I'm looking for is a spice rack.  Isn't that pathetic?  I've looked at spice racks high and low and have found some pretty nifty ones that came close.  I'm also found of the modern look of the magnetic ones that stick to your fridge but wouldn't want to be refilling them all the time.

My current kitchen spice racks is non existent at the moment as it consists of shelves in my cabinet stuffed to the brim.  It's quite annoying to say the least.  I've had a wall spice rack in the past find that they don't hold enough spices for me or the bottle sizes don't always match up.

Do any of you have this same problem when it comes to spices?  The best one I've had thus far was a slender cabinet that pulled out with notches big enough to hold spices, dressing, cans and other goods.  At the moment I have to take out five spices to find the one spice I'm looking for.  Ack!  Beware of falling spices!

Into Gadgets? Try Gadgets for Geeks

Geek Alerts is a website that offers news and information on the latest cool gadgets like LED chrome waterfall faucet, quirky gizmos like lego utensils, and geeky stuff like iphone app fridge magnets.  I even came across a shot glass checkers set!  That would really put a 360 spin on a game of boring checkers wouldn't it?  While on the other hand I came across a sushi pillow.  Unless it's a restaurant, I'm not sure that would jive well in many homes.

It's a fun site with lots of entertaining new posts every day. In addition to geek news, they also offer online coupons like Cabelas coupons, promotion codes like the Newegg promo code, and discounts for online stores.  All of the coupons that I checked out were very well updated and all current which is nice.  No having to flip through a list of expired/unusable coupons to find what you want.

If your into tech stuff and want to save money, so you can buy more gadgets at good prices then you may want to check it out!  Heck even if your not into tech stuff I'm sure you may get a kick out of some of the gadgets they post about for sure!

Time Warner Cable Deals

>> Wednesday, June 22, 2011

I've spoke a little about my old cable/internet service before I moved to an area that offered more variety.  The old internet service was the only internet provider which only offered dsl so we were limited on the options we could roll with.  Not to mention it wasn't very fast and the price wasn't comparable.  I've learned since then that not all cable services are created equal.

Since our move and now being in an area that offers a couple different options of service we are happier.  We have one of the Time Warner Cable deals where phone, internet and digital cable are provided to us in a bundle.  For us personally it made more economic sense to purchase a bundle than going the other route.

Cable can sometimes be a luxury that some can't afford or simply opt out of.  For us, we enjoy being able to kick back on the couch and either watch movies, record our favorite shows, watch football, news and whatever else floats our boat.  It's a big entertainment factor for us. Instead of going out all the time we really enjoy being with family hanging out at home.

In fact, after redoing our hardwood floors we had the internet and digital box disconnected for a few days and it was one of the first things we put back after we were done!  We realized just how heavy we rely and depend on the convenience of our service.  Not to mention we are current event junkies.  Do you think you would miss your internet or cable if you just disconnected it for a few days?

What items does your family fly through quickly?

>> Thursday, June 16, 2011

Lately I've been playing around surfing online since my loss of the net (from when we refinished the hardwood floors) and came across Befrugal.com which I have just added to my list of sights to watch.  It's a bright fun site with but loads of coupons that are just my style.

Once I get the printer loaded up with new ink and paper I'm going on a printable coupons spree.  I'm almost hesitant to say when the last coupon I printed was.  Sometimes I get in these funks where I love couponing and then sometimes a break brings me back.  It's nice to get away from it for a bit and not be hassled with a coupon  binder and all the jazz that comes with it.

I can feel these effects in my small stockpile.  I never desired to have a big stockpile but what I did have was modest and now it's been dwindling.  I'm already getting a list ready of grocery coupons I will need.  I've almost used up entirely on  items like shampoo/conditioner, toothpaste, mouthwash, sandwich bags, tea bags, coffee, cereal,  and certainly others like the weekly milk, bread and egg runs.  What are some items that you family goes through quickly?

Tips for buying gently used second hand clothes like Childrenswear

Ah, how kids grow!!   Buying new clothes is great but sometimes it's nice to spend your hard earned money and bring home a lot more outfits whether it is with coupons, consignment shopping, thrift stores or other.  Here are some things I keep an eye on when consignment shopping and even when clearance shopping for clothes because you just never know.

Tip #1  Wash - If I buy gently used second hand clothes whether it is from a consignment shop, thrift store or garage sale even I wash it right when I get home.  Even in department stores clothes fall on the floor, get tried on, and more I'm sure.

Tip #2  Always check for holes, missing zippers, buttons, stains, and other things that would make it unwearable especially in childrenswear as they really can take a beating.

Tip #3 Look for brands and know prices - Just because it's a cheap price doesn't mean it's worth the money.  Look for brands that wear well.   You could find department store brands for wonderful prices and some even that have original tags on them, you'd be surprised.  Where the cheap price doesn't play well with me is when I see something at a thrift shop that I've seen at a department store on clearance and it's now selling for more.

Tip #4  Know the difference.  A consignment shop is typically pickier about what they put for sale since whatever is sold is split between the shop and the person who brought the item in.  There prices reflect this as in being a bit higher than thrift stores. Thrift stores on the other hand rely mostly on donations so often times you will notice a difference whether it be in cleanliness or amount of clothes for sale.

Tip #5 Take a buddy with you.  It's not only more fun but you'll come out ahead when someone else is hunting with you.

Tip #6 Have a plan.  Go in, look, browse, dig in and then know when it's time to go.  Just because you are there doesn't mean you have to buy a thing, deal or no deal.  If nothing is floating your boat then maybe next time.

Tip #7 Somethings are best bought new.  Some items are a judgment call.  I'm talking along the lines of personal items and I'll leave it at that.

Tip #8 Location.  Seriously speaking without sounding snobbish  if you shop a thrift store near or around a very nice neighborhood/big city you may typically find higher end clothes versus others.

Tip #9 Screw the clothes just run around naked.  HaHaHaHa!

Did I miss anything?  If you have a tip you'd like to share leave it in the comment section so we can all benefit.  I'd love to hear your ideas.

Taking it Easy

It's that time of year again when travelers hit the road for some fun summer adventures.   Last summer we traveled to Wisconsin as well as went to Cedar Point and had a blast.  It was a long ride up to Wisconsin and believe it or not right off Lake Superior the wind was quite chilly to us despite it being July!  It's a good thing my relatives gave warning to bring at least a sweatshirt or two.

We stayed up there to ring in July 4th  and watched the fireworks off the lake.  We could actually see the Duluth Minnesota side (which we hung out at too) as well as the Lake Superior Wisconsin side.  It was pretty cool and I love the quaintness of Superior.

We also ventured to another lake in Wisconsin which houses many family gatherings (for my northern family) every year.  There's a ton of fishing, swimming, cabins, park homes, pontooning, kayaking, and so much more.  I even went water tubing for the first time ever if you can imagine that!  Even in the winter there's something to do on the lake like ice fishing!

Cedar Point was fun but extremely packed.  There were a few rides we didn't even go on (but wanted to) because the lines were over an hour long and it was smoking hot that day!

This year we are going to take it easy and kick it at home or at least that's the plan...for now.

Have you made any travel plans for summer?

#chevyfun history under the floor boards! @chevyohio

In the process of pulling up old carpet and padding then refinishing and sanding the old 100 year old hard wood floors (which have been painted..ugh) we had to patch up some areas.   It's ugly I know but it will be lovely when it's done.

Each room has a patch from old gas lighting. These boards were in bad shape so we pulled them up and by a surprise found this old newspaper (Akron Beacon Journal) shoved in the joists.  This is just one of many neat tid bits of history we've found within walls/floors etc.

But check it out! I couldn't find an exact date per say on the paper but judging by the car in the photo and the years of the cars I'd say about early 50's. I'm not sure the make of the first car but there's a 47 chevrolet and a 51 pontiac listed each having a heater, radio, and good tires as the key selling points.  Sure was a lot simpler then wasn't it?  I sure wouldn't mind having anyone of these sitting in my garage, would you?

In addition, there was an old love letter and 1 cent post card dated from the 40's!

Mailbox Goodies - Free Glidden Paint and Cheese!

Mail Call!  Here's what I got this crazy week (and last week).  We've been re-doing a few of our floors by tearing up carpet and refinishing the hard wood floor underneath so it's been very busy.  This will be our third room in the past two months.  We can almost see the light now...almost.  We couldn't have asked for more beautiful weather to work with either.

I snapped photos of what I could and the rest probably got displaced in the shuffle of furniture etc.  For instance, we get some brochure for lace wigs although none of us wear them which is odd.  It comes every so often and has been even before I even started sampling. The lace front wigs seem to be hot among celebrities now days though.

Anyways,  for starters I received a hot coupon from All You's Reality Checkers for a free package of Borden's Cheese.  I saw this at Wal-mart and thus far is the only store I've been able to find it at.  The Woman's Day is a free subscription and the corn on the cover is actually cup cakes!  Isn't that cute?

I got multiple issues of Martha Stewart Living and a Biolage sample.  In addition, I also got the Glidden paint giveaway that went on awhile back.

And last but not least another Martha Stewart Living and a check from Synovate which is a legit survey site.  What goodies did you receive this week?

Net Back

For the past couple of days we've had our internet unplugged trying to finish up a room we've been working on.  The modem and router just kept getting in the way and getting very dusty in the process.  We have since pretty much finished the room and are dreading the next one up for grabs - the living room.

I think this would be a good time to find cheap flights out of here and sip margaritas at some tropical beach.  That would be so nice, don't you think?  Working on your home while living in it really does take a lot out of you like you wouldn't believe.  I guess after it's all said and done there would be no need to become a friend with united airlines

Last time I updated you we had just disconnected the desktops and I was laptop bound.  We now have our desktops back up and running.  I like the laptop but for the sake of blogging I'm much more fond of the desktop plus it has word.  Are you taking any flights this summer if so where are you going?

flipflop Wines Review

>> Monday, June 6, 2011

If you love wine like I do then I do believe you'll love the newly launched flipflop wine collection.  The flipflop collection includes Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Moscato, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir.

I think these wines would be of interest to to all readers of The Frugal Bug.  Here's why:

 1. They are outstanding wines at a great value (in fact they are downright frugal) with a price of only $7 SRP. You may also be able to find them even lower.  For the past few weeks I've seen these at my local Beuhler's displayed cute with real flipflops with a highlighted price of $5.99.

2. Flipflop wines have partnered with Soles4Souls Inc., the international shoe charity dedicated to providing freefootwear to those in need. The program will raise much needed funds to give onepair of flip-flop sandals for each bottle of flipflop wine purchased (up to100,000 pairs for the first 100,000 bottles sold, where promotion is legal. Tolearn more about Soles4Souls, please visit: http://www.soles4souls.org/

3.   Wine Enthusiast magazine gave 4 flipflop wines a "Best Buy"!

I had the opportunity to try these wines and I was so excited to do so!   I love a good glass of wine every now and then in the evening and was very impressed.  I received the Pinot Grigio, Riesling, and the Pinot Noir.

Out of all of these the Pinot Grigio was my absolute favorite.  This variety is best served chilled and goes great with spaghetti (my favorite food)!  The Pinot Grigio was just the perfect happy medium for me.  This will definitely be my new to-go-to wine.

If you are more of a sweeter wine fan then the Riesling serves up a great combination of medium sweetness with peach, apricot, and melon overtones.  One of my friends is a huge Riesling fan because it pairs so well with different foods.

The Pinot Noir is the dryer of the three wines.  I particularly enjoyed this one with grilled foods like shrimp kabobs.  If your planning a romantic dinner then you may want to add this one to your list.

One thing I especially love about these wines is that there are tid bits of information on each bottle such as:

  • What they taste like
  • What to eat with them
  • Whether to serve them chilled or room temp
  • How to store them
  • Vintage, appellation, and whether each is dry, medium, or sweet

In addition, these bottles rock.  I have saved mine to use as vases for summer time flowers.  These are perfect for the start of summer so be on the look out for these awesome affordable wines!  Perfect for a steamy hot summer's day while your rockin' in your flipflops!

To learn more about the wines, you can visit their website at: http://www.flipflopwines.com/ and or
check out their Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/flipflopwines

I received flipflop wines to facilitate this review. The opinions expressed are my own and I was not swayed by the items mentioned above.
